Freddy Peralta is heading to Tampa, according to sources.
After a brief but disappointing tenure with the Mets, the right-handed starter has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for three minor leaguers, pending a physical. He’s the second pitcher to be traded out of Queens this week, with left-hander A.J. Minter going to the Minnesota Twins late Thursday night. Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley and Huascar Brazobán are also expected to be traded ahead of Monday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.
Peralta was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter to lead the Mets’ rotation, but was never able to become the ace he had been over the last three seasons once in New York. It was a frustrating season for the 30-year-old Dominican. He’s healthy, and his stuff is still there, yet the results were dismal almost right from the start. He leaves the Mets with a 5-9 record and a 4.99 ERA over 22 starts.
Peralta’s 1.2 WAR this season is one of the worst among all qualified starters in baseball.
The Rays had interest in Holmes as well, who is pitching for Low-A Brooklyn on Sunday, while the Mets finished a series against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field. They sent two scouts to watch him pitch in Florida earlier this week. The top team in the AL East has been seeking pitching help to bolster an already solid rotation that has Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Nick Martinez.
