The New York Mets had another rough night in Philadelphia ,as they got beat again by the Phillies, 6-2, in another game in which they offered little competition or resistance.
The Mets picked up right where they left off last night in this one, as they spotted the Phils a 5-0 lead in the first two innings. The Phillies scored an unearned run off Mets starter David Peterson as Peterson walked Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber to get in instant trouble.
Alec Bohm reached on an infield hit, and Turner scored on a throwing error by third baseman Brett Baty. Edmundo Sosa scored Schwarber with an infield hit, and just like that the Mets were down 2-0.
Schwarber ended the small-ball nonsense in the second as he cranked a three-run homer to make it 5-0, and at that point the game felt close to over.
The Mets did get a run back in the third on a Carson Benge homer or Phillies starter Zack Wheeler, but Bryce Harper got it back with a solo shot for Philly in the fifth off reliever Austin Warren to make it 6-1.
Peterson left after four, and once again his line was ugly. He gave up five runs, four earned on six hits and two walks as he also struck out five. His ERA rose again to 6.09, but nothing about any of this was surprising if you’ve been watching Peterson and the Mets lately.
The Mets got another run back in the sixth as Wheeler lost the plate and walked three hitters, and a grounder by A.J. Ewing got their second run of the night home.
The Mets went quietly after that without another rally, as a series of relievers that included Jonathan Bowlan, Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering and Jhaon Duran combined to shut them out over the final 3-2/3 innings, and the Mets used Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter to hold the line and complete their failure in Philly as the Mets lost two of three.
New York has had a season full of lowlights, but this was one of the worst, and it might have been the worst. Losing series is nothing new for the Mets, but the way the Mets lost this one was truly remarkable, as they were embarrassed last night and became an afterthought after the first three innings of this one. The Metes now return home to face the Cubs as what’s become a long trudge of a season continues.
