New York Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes has reinvented himself this season. The 32-year-old primarily came out of the bullpen before arriving to Queens, as he only started four games from 2018-24, which were all as a rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The New York Yankees turned Holmes into a closer in 2022, and he converted 20 out of 25 save opportunities. The right-hander then converted 24 out of 27 opportunities in 2023, but just 30 out of 43 in 2024. His 13 blown saves led baseball last season.

However, the Mets converted Holmes (4-1) to a starter this season, and they couldn't have asked for a better start to the season from him. The 6-foot-5-inch, 245-pounder has a 2.95 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in seven starts thus far.

Holmes allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. The two-time All-Star earned the win, but had an injury scare when he got hit by a comebacker.

However, Holmes insisted that he was fine after the contest, via SNY.

"I'm good, I'm good...It hit me in the same spot as the comeback in 2020 when I broke my leg, but it's all good," he said. "Just a little sore. We'll work through it."

The Mets (22-11) won 9-3 after the bullpen pitched three shutout innings.
