Mets predicted to trade for disgruntled $30M flamethrower, Cy Young winner to replace Freddy Peralta originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Pittsburgh Pirates recently extended young phenom Konnor Griffin before addressing flamethrower Paul Skenes. Griffin, who was just called up, will now be earning a significant salary from the Pirates organization.

“Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a nine-year extension, the team announced, locking up the top prospect in baseball less than a week after his major league debut. The deal is worth $140 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan and Buster Olney,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.

Now, the Pirates find themselves in a tricky situation with Skenes, who is likely growing disgruntled after winning a Cy Young without receiving any form of extension. This could prompt a trade, with the New York Mets emerging as a team to watch.

“The Mets and Yankees often compete for top-tier talent on the free-agent market. In this case, Steve Cohen's best chance to add a player like Skenes could be via trade. The Mets have a strong farm system, and if they cannot extend Freddy Peralta, David Stearns will be tempted to use it to make a strong offer, either for Skenes or a pitcher who's actually available on the trade market. A more pressing matter for Pittsburgh is that Skenes will enter arbitration next year. He could easily receive record marks in a process meant to keep star players under contract at an affordable rate. If Skenes is set to receive, say, $30 million,” FanSided’s Mark Powell wrote.

Pairing Freddy Peralta with Skenes would create a formidable duo for the Mets, but contract talks with Peralta have stalled since his trade.

“I’m not going to comment on any sort of extension or contract talks,” Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns told reporters.

If Peralta doesn’t return, Skenes is the clear choice to become the team’s ace. New York likely won’t hesitate to give him the money he deserves.

Mets fans would surely be thrilled at the prospect of Skenes anchoring their rotation in Queens. Only time will tell whether the Mets go all-in, but it’s clear that Skenes’ relationship with Pittsburgh is beginning to falter.
