Mets oddly linked to AL Cy Young candidate for probable Freddy Peralta reason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets have had a brutal season.
Baseball Reference gives the AL East club a minuscule 0.6% chance to earn a postseason berth.
It's fair to wonder if David Stearns, the Mets' president of baseball operations, is on the hot seat.
It appears likely the Mets will be sellers at this year's trade deadline, and that includes dealing All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta.
Free agency is waiting for Peralta at the end of the season, and discussions about an extension between the two sides are quiet. That's likely one of the reasons ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel named the Mets a top landing spot for a Cy Young candidate from the Los Angeles Angels.
"Since starting the season by giving up one run in his first 37⅔ innings, [Jose] Soriano has posted an ERA approaching 5.00. The stuff still really plays, and plenty of organizations believe they can help work out the control kinks that can plague Soriano," the ESPN duo wrote.
"Add to that the two years of control and the same pitching-hungry organizations that want [Reid] Detmers -- contenders and teams that intend to contend in the coming years -- will be interested in Soriano."
The two years of control would play an important factor in a potential trade between the Mets and the Los Angeles Angels involving Soriano.

Is he as talented as Peralta? No, but at least New York would be adding a more than solid arm to their rotation for the next few years. Command is an issue, as Soriano's 42 free passes lead the Majors.
If the Angels were smart, which is a tall task, they would capitalize on Soriano's success and trade him this year. This wouldn't be the worst way for the Mets to start building next year's roster.
