The New York Mets appeared to be headed for a quiet offseason, but things quickly heated up. New York struck a surprise deal with Bo Bichette — a player the Philadelphia Phillies believed they were close to landing. The agreement came shortly after the Mets missed out on Kyle Tucker.
“The New York Mets, in a quick pivot after failing to sign Kyle Tucker, have agreed to a three-year, $126 million contract with infielder Bo Bichette, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
New York also strengthened its outfield by trading for Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox. The move added another power bat to the lineup alongside Juan Soto and signaled that the Mets were not content to stand pat.
“The New York Mets acquired center fielder Luis Robert Jr. in a trade with the Chicago White Sox late Tuesday, adding a strong defensive presence with a high-upside offensive game as they reshape their roster after a disappointing 2025,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote.
Still, the Mets may not be finished adding talent. FanSided’s Mark Powell believes New York could pursue a trade for veteran outfielder Byron Buxton.
“Much like the Phillies, adding as much firepower into the batting order is necessary. The Mets had a disappointing 2025 season, fell short of the MLB postseason and now have to figure out how to contend in 2026. The Mets added Juan Soto last offseason as their big addition and now they need to replace Pete Alonso's bat. Buxton seems like the perfect option,” Powell wrote.
The Mets are clearly pushing to rebound after last season’s shortcomings. With several key free agents departing, New York has been aggressive in replacing that production — whether through pitching upgrades or adding power to the lineup.
Buxton would represent a major addition, potentially giving the Mets three highly reliable bats in the middle of their order. Given how aggressive New York has been this offseason, if an opportunity to acquire Buxton presents itself, there’s little reason to believe they wouldn’t explore getting a deal done.
