New York Mets rookie outfielder Carson Benge suffered an injury during Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In a disappointing year for the Mets, the 23-year-old has been a major bright spot. Across 422 at-bats, he has posted a .270 batting average, .330 on-base percentage, .742 OPS, 13 home runs and 46 RBIs.

Benge suffered the setback after slamming into the wall while making a sliding catch. He was checked on by trainers and replaced in the game. After the game, interim manager Chad Green revealed that X-rays were negative and Benge is dealing with left wrist soreness.

Despite that, the Mets held Benge out of the lineup for Saturday’s matchup with Pittsburgh. Benge himself spoke with reporters during pregame and revealed he should only be out for a few days and will avoid a stint on the 10-day injured list.

With Benge’s absence expected to be brief, the Mets still made a roster move to address their depth and get another player into the mix.

Moments before Saturday’s game, the team added recent waiver wire claim Gabriel Arias, claimed from the Cleveland Guardians, to the active roster. In a corresponding move, Eric Wagaman was optioned to Triple-A.

The reason Wagaman became expendable is straightforward. Since Benge’s absence will not be lengthy, the Mets did not need to add outfield depth.

Arias is capable only of playing the infield, while Wagaman can patrol corner outfield spots if necessary, making Wagaman the more logical option to send down given the specific nature of the roster hole being filled.
