In the bottom of the third inning of the Mets’ 6-4 victory over the Pirates, Carson Benge made a terrific sliding catch in left field, sliding into the wall, with all the impact on his extended left wrist. He was pulled from the game and sent for imaging. Initial x-rays on the wrist were negative. According to interim manager Andy Green, if his wrist is still sore on Saturday, further imaging may be required, but the Mets were optimistic with the results of the x-ray.
Benge, who started his Mets career by homering on Opening Day, went through a rough patch at the start of this season, not seeing his batting average climb above .200 until May 6. But since the start of July, Benge has looked like a much more complete hitter, collecting hits in 21 of his last 28 games. On the season, Benge is hitting .270/.330/.412 with 15 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, and 18 stolen bases, all while looking very, very good in the outfield. Before his injury last night, Benge was 2-2 with a stolen base and two runs driven in.
Cristian Pache filled in for the remainder of the game in left, going 0-2 and striking out twice.
