The New York Mets lost 6-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals in the first half of their doubleheader on Sunday afternoon despite their best efforts to come back from a four-run deficit. Starting pitcher Blake Tidwell allowed all six runs across 3.2 innings in his big-league debut, and that was enough to do them in.
Brandon Nimmo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI double before Wilson Conteras hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second. Jesse Winker followed up with a sacrifice fly for the Mets (22-12) in the third, and then the Cardinals (15-19) scored five unanswered runs across the third and fourth frames.
Francisco Lindor later drove in three runs, but St. Louis shut down New York in the ninth to seal the win.
To make matters worse, Winker left in the fourth with right side discomfort. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that the 31-year-old got an MRI on his oblique after the game, via SNY.

"Yeah, when you're hurt in that area, those are tricky," he admitted when asked if the injury is concerning. "I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but he's getting an MRI."
Winker is slashing .239/.321/.418 with one homer and 10 RBI in 24 games this season.
If the former Cincinnati Red misses time, New York could call fellow left-handed hitter Brett Baty back up to the big leagues to fill that void in the lineup. It could stick Baty at third base and Mark Vientos at designated hitter, or Baty at second and Jeff McNeil in the outfield.
Mets fans on social media would like to see Baty back at the top level.
"Baty time (if he’s healthy). Play him at third and DH Vientos against righties," one fan said.
"I need Brett Baty back in the majors asap," another one said.
"What’s Brett Baty up to?" another one asked.
