Memphis basketball will make a trip to Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, this season, where it will face Dayton on Nov. 29, as part of the Atlantic 10/American Conference Showcase.
The Tigers' matchup with the Flyers was confirmed by The Commercial Appeal in March, but the contest's site — which holds some modicum of significance for Penny Hardaway's program and its fans — was announced Aug. 6. The event ( (a doubleheader that also features a game between Saint Louis and South Florida) was initially set to be played at the United Center in Chicago.
Memphis is returning to Nationwide Arena for the first time since March 10, 2023, when it lost to FAU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in what was perhaps the biggest heartbreaker of the Hardaway era. It was on that floor (Ohio State's home arena) where the Tigers lost to the Owls 66-65. Leading 65-64 with 6.7 seconds to play, players from both teams scrambled for a loose ball that was ultimately secured by former Memphis guard Jayden Hardaway, who tried to call timeout. But officials did not award the timeout to the Tigers, instead signaling a jump ball, giving FAU possession with 6.3 seconds on the clock.
Then, with 2.8 seconds remaining, FAU's Nick Boyd hit the go-ahead shot. The Owls went on to beat 16-seed Fairleigh-Dickinson in the Round of 32, then blazed all the way to the Final Four.
This season's Memphis-Dayton matchup will be the 20th all-time between the two programs. The Flyers hold a 12-8 edge in the series, but the Tigers won the most recent game, which was a first-round NIT game on March 20, 2021, in Denton, Texas. Memphis went on to win the NIT title.
The Tigers are set to play 14 nonconference games (two of which have not yet been announced) and 18 American Conference games this season, beginning with the neutral-site matchup against Iowa State on Nov. 2 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
