Memphis basketball commit Nemanja Popović arrived in Memphis July 3 and has been cleared to participate in practice, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told The Commercial Appeal.

Sources requested anonymity because no announcement has been made.

The 6-foot-9 Serbian center has not yet been formally announced by the school as a signee and Popović has not publicly acknowledged his decision to join the team for the 2026-27 season. But Popović has enrolled in classes and he is listed in the University of Memphis' online student directory.

The other 14 players on coach Penny Hardaway's roster recently completed the first session of summer workouts, which began June 2. The second session is set to begin July 6.

The 24-year-old most recently played for King Wilki Morskie Szczecin (the King Szczecin Sea Wolves) of the Polish Basketball League (PLK) and averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in 27 games, earning All-PLK honors in the process. The season before, playing for KK Vršac in his native Serbia, Popović averaged 18.2 points and 7.4 rebounds en route to being named the league's MVP.

Popović joins a Memphis frontcourt that includes transfers Corneilous Williams and Maxim Logue, returner William Whorton (who appeared in 19 games last season) and incoming freshman Fred Smith Jr.

King Wilki Morskie Szczecin coach Maciej Majcherek recently provided an overview of Popović's game to The Commercial Appeal.

"Very talented. Very mobile, especially for position 5. He was the best center in the league this last season," Majcherek said. "Has really good low post. Can finish right, left hand. What I like, I like he’s so mobile. He can dribble. He can get a rebound and go coast-to-coast. He is really physical and really skilled in the low post. Has long wing span."

Williams, who spent the past two seasons at North Alabama, led the Atlantic Sun in rebounding both years at 9.1 and 9.3 boards per game, respectively. Logue (6-9) spent last season at FAU, where he averaged 4.8 points (on 67.4% shooting from the field) and 3.1 rebounds in 28 games for the Owls. He added 15 blocks and 14 steals in 11 minutes per game.

Memphis opens the season against Iowa State on Nov. 2 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
