Megan Keller scores golden goal: How USA stunned Canada in comeback OT gold medal win originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The United States has won the gold medal in women’s ice hockey.
One of the best events in the entire Olympics needed extra time to be decided. Canada led for most of the game, but the United States scored a thrilling goal with about two minutes left in regulation to force overtime.
In the sudden-death format, it was back and forth throughout the brief extra session. Defender Megan Keller took the puck down the ice and chose not to wait for teammates. She deked a Canadian player and then flipped a backhand toward the goalie. The puck appeared to hit either the stick of a diving defender or the goalie’s leg pads before going into the net for the win.
Here is more on Keller’s overtime winner that gave the United States the gold medal over Canada.

It looked like Canada was going to win in regulation. Kristin O'Neill scored a shorthanded goal in the first minute of the second period, and with almost two minutes left in the game, the USA was unable to get on the scoreboard. Then, with 2:04 left in the game, Laila Edwards fired a puck toward the group in front of the Canadian goal, and the puck went off of Hilary Knight and past the Team Canada keeper.

In overtime, Olympic hockey rules force the action to a golden goal situation in a 20-minute period, but in a 3-on-3 format. With just over 4 minutes played in the extra period, Keller put a puck on net and it found its way into the goal. Since she is typically a defender, this likely marks the biggest goal she has scored in her life.
