Jack Hughes scores golden goal: USA star plays hero for Americans in OT gold medal win over Canada originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After the United States and Canada both needed overtime goals just to survive and advance through the Olympic bracket, it was only appropriate that the gold medal game also came down to overtime.
16 years after Sidney Crosby's overtime goal won gold for Canada in Vancouver, the United States made sure history didn't repeat itself. Jack Hughes, who was only eight years old when the Americans suffered heartbreak in 2010, won it for the USA with a laser into the net.
Hughes' goal gave the United States its first Olympic gold in men's hockey since 1980, when the "Miracle on Ice" set the stage for gold. It's also the first time the United States has ever won gold in both men's and women's hockey in the same Olympics.
Here's a look at the golden goal that capped off a remarkable Olympic run for the United States.

Canada had its share of opportunities in the opening minutes of overtime, but the United States gained an advantage in the moments leading up to Hughes' goal and didn't waste it. Werenski fired to Hughes, who shot the puck past Jordan Binnington's left shoulder and got the celebration started.
The goal came after Hughes was bloodied by a high stick from Sam Bennett in the third period. The USA couldn't take advantage of the double minor penalty against Bennett, but Connor Hellebuyck's heroics helped get the game to overtime and set the stage for the biggest moment of Hughes' hockey career.

Matt Boldy put the USA in front six minutes into the game with a brilliant goal, beating Cale Makar and Devon Toews to get a shot on Binnington, but Makar tied the game in the second period.
Despite being significantly out-shot late in regulation, the USA held strong with Hellebuyck in net and prevailed in overtime.
