It’s been a few weeks since the Los Angeles Rams shocked the NFL by drafting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at the No. 13 slot.
Many NFL experts questioned the move at the time and wondered how current NFL MVP Matthew Stafford would respond.
According to Simpson, Stafford finally reached out to him via text, Gary Klein of the L.A. Times reports.
“It was funny because, of course, he was like, ‘Welcome, man. I’m super pumped,’” Simpson said. “He was like, ‘Loved watching you play, but you played for the wrong jersey,’ because he’s pumping up Georgia.”
“So when I see him on Monday, I’m going to give him heck about that,” he said. “But it’s cool. I’m super excited, especially having him and [quarterback] Stetson [Bennett] in there, Georgia guys, and me, an Alabama guy, so I’ve got to stand up for myself,” Simpson added.
Contrary to popular belief, the Rams told Stafford they would draft Simpson, but, of course, as we all found out later, everyone involved was kept under strict secrecy.
Stafford’s wife, Kelly, was one of the first people to reach out to Simpson and welcomed him to the team. Simpson didn’t say when Matthew Stafford got in touch with him.
