Rams' Matthew Stafford reveals 2026 plan with Ty Simpson shadow looming originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

When the Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick, many were shocked, and attention went straight to what Matthew Stafford thought of the move.

With it clear that Stafford is the starter, the Rams have an eye on the future with Simpson, because there is a real chance that the 2026 season could be Matthew's last, so why not get a younger player to learn from him while he's still playing?

The dynamic of the quarterback room is a little interesting now, as Simpson is clearly seen as the guy to replace Stafford when the time comes.

But Matthew has made it clear that his plan for the season hasn't changed one bit with Simpson coming in.

"I think my job, first and foremost, is to get myself and our team ready to play as best I possibly can," Stafford said via NFL.com. "He's a part of that team, there's no question about it. We're in a unique position in the fact that we play the same position. I have a ton of experience, and he's just now starting his journey as an NFL player. So, listen, I know he's gonna watch, not only me, but other guys, you know?"

Will Simpson play 2026?

For the Rams' sake, they hope that the only time Simpson sees the field is to either take a knee late in the game or if the Rams are up by multiple scores with a couple of minutes left and he cleans up.

That's it.

Anything else means that Stafford is injured, and that is nightmare fuel for the Rams this season, as their Super Bowl hopes would be in tatters.

Simpson has the chance to learn from Stafford for a full season, maybe two, before taking the role for himself, and that could be the best course of action for the young quarterback.

But one thing is for sure: Stafford isn't changing anything just because L.A. drafted his replacement.
