Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Ty Simpson did not hold back when asked if he was taken aback by the criticism he received after being selected 13th overall.

In a recent Q&A with Sports Illustrated, Simpson provided a blunt response to the backlash over the pick.

" I really didn’t care, to be honest with you. Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business. So, the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick, so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be, the best Ty I can be, and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do."

Matthew Stafford extension clarifies Ty Simpson timeline

Not many predicted the Rams would have taken Simpson, let alone a quarterback, in last month's draft. Nevertheless, the Rams believe Simpson could be their future franchise quarterback once Matthew Stafford decides to call his career quits.

The 23-year-old quarterback will eventually be thrust into the fire.

The when of that happening become more clear on Thursday when the Rams extended Stafford. The veteran quarterback agreed to terms on a one-year, $55 million extension that can be worth up to $60 million with incentives. The extension locks him up for the next two years through the 2027 season.

So, if Stafford plays through his contract and retires soon after, Simpson will likely be the Rams' starting quarterback to enter the 2028 season.

In the meantime, Simpson is no stranger to waiting on the bench. That was the case for the first three seasons of his college career at Alabama, and that will certainly be the case in 2026 and 2027.

A few weeks day Simpson said he looks forward to learning under the 2025 NFL MVP.

"(I admire) how cool, calm and collected he always is," Simpson said, "how he's so smart. He can manipulate the defense. And he's a gunslinger, like he has no fear. As a quarterback, you have to have no fear when you're in the huddle, and he slings that ball around and he makes other people better around him.

"I couldn't ask for a better situation."
