WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter plans to keep his player personnel decisions within the same circle he's used since before revenue share and name, image and likeness became factors.

Painter said Wednesday he does not plan to hire a general manager to assist with front-office decisions such as talent evaluation and contract negotiations. Purdue football, with a considerably larger roster, does utilize a GM and multiple other front-office positions.

The title is increasingly more common in basketball, too. Indiana recently hired Ryan Carr, formerly Pacers senior vice president of player personnel, as GM. Programs such as Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, and Wisconsin are among those with someone on staff holding some version of the general manager title.

Painter, though, has always kept a relatively tight circle. He and director of basketball operations Elliot Bloom handle the bulk of what would be considered front-office duties. Bloom is in his 18th season as DOBO, after seven years with Purdue in sports information.

"They're paying somebody for what we do already," Painter said. "You want knowledge of the game. You want knowledge of the business. You want knowledge of how you operate and how you do things.

"I would just bring somebody in and need to explain to them 37 years in college basketball."

Painter's roster consistency also has made the revenue share and NIL process a bit more streamlined than some of his Big Ten peers. Purdue added two transfers in the last offseason after adding none the year before. It already added one for next season in former Princeton forward Caden Pierce.

Trusting someone else to be involved with contracts and negotiating with agents is one thing. Trusting someone new to make talent evaluations, Painter said, is another.

"You can have general managers, assistant general managers, director of player personnel are you good at evaluating players or not? Because that's the key," Painter said. "People think the key is money, and the key's not money.

"Sometimes you'll get into where you think you don't have enough to get a certain player, but it doesn't stop you from getting the next player. You think that guy's the be-all, end-all. There's a lot of really good players out there. You've got to find those guys. You've got to be able to evaluate. That's what's getting lost here."
