I pulled this off the Rams Message Board:

Getting Defensive: Martz sticks up for MarmieBy Jim Thomas Of the Post-Dispatch 10/25/2004

The Dolphins' Sammy Morris runs 8 yards for a touchdown Sunday, maneuvering through the Rams 27th-ranked defense.
(Steve Mitchell/AP)

By the numbers, the Rams' defensive performance isn't pretty seven games into the season. They rank 27th in total defense, have failed to produce a takeaway in five of their seven contests and have yielded more points (165) than all but three NFL teams.

But when asked to evaluate the work of new defensive coordinator Larry Marmie, coach Mike Martz went on the offensive.

'First of all, that's none of your business,' Martz told a reporter at his Monday news conference. 'What I think of my staff, my assessment of the staff, is certainly personal.'

And furthermore. ...

'I think he's a terrific coach, and I think he's done a terrific job,' Martz added. 'I think he's as good a coach as there is in the National Football League. I think he's doing a terrific job over there.'

Update on Marmie vs. Pendergast

Points allowed per game:
Cards - 17.3
Rams - 23.6

Yards allowed per game:
Cards - 349.0
Rams - 359.4

Turnovers forced:
Cards - 18 in six games
Rams - 7 in seven games

I wonder where are all the assclown Rams fans who said that Marmie would be good in St. Louis because the Cardinal players suck?

i'd like to see those compared to last year's stats.

the thing that really sticks out is the turn overs. iirc, the Rams have had a very aggressive defense the past couple of years and created alot of TOs. This year they seem to be not as fortuitous.

The Clancy Gang has surely impressed me with their aggressiveness thus far. It's about freaking time we had a defense that created havoc (sans Jabba Ryan's 46)

Here's what I got from the rams board.

RAMS in 2004 (with Marmie)
Through 6 games
Points surrendered: 165 (27.5 per game)
Opponents’ total net yards: 2,184 (364 ypg.)
Turnovers caused: 6

RAMS in 2003 (pre-Marmie)
Through 6 games
Points surrendered: 108 (18 ppg.)
Opponents’ total yards: 1,784 (297.3 ypg.)
Turnovers caused: 15

CARDINALS in 2003 (with Marmie)
Through 6 games
Points surrendered: 180 (30 ppg.)
Turnovers caused: 5

CARDINALS in 2004 (post Marmie)
Through 6 games
Points surrendered: 104 (17.3 points per game)
Turnovers caused: 14

So, under Marmie, the Rams give up 9.5 more points and just over 66 more yards per game this year, while causing 60 percent fewer turnovers than Lovie's squad did last year.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, allow 12 fewer points per game and cause 280 percent more turnovers than they did under Marmie.

Don't we have 18 turnovers so far this season? Either way, that's phenomenal improvement from last season.
