A great game, but one in which the Miami Marlins were on the wrong end of it.
That was how manager Clayton McCullough described the Marlins dropping a 2-1 extra-inning heartbreaker against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in Milwaukee.
“It was a great baseball game on both sides,” he said. “We made our share of really good defensive plays. It was, for the most part, well pitched on both sides, and good game there, and they came through with a two-out knock there to win it.”
The Brewers scored the winning run in the 10th inning when Garrett Mitchell drove in the automatic runner on a two-out single up the middle. Mitchell delivered the third walk-off of his career.
While the Brewers snapped a three-game losing streak, the Marlins’ skid was extended to four, picking up where they left off after being swept by Cleveland before the MLB All-Star Game.
“I think we’ve played a lot of these games and are used to playing close, tight games like this,” McCullough said.
The game was scoreless until Griffin Conine hit a solo home run off Logan Henderson in the fifth inning. Conine, who is slashing .421/.421/.947 in his last seven games, has homered three times during that stretch.
Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara gave up one run on three hits with seven strikeouts for his league-leading 15th quality start. Alcantara, who already passed Ricky Nolasco (2006-13) for the franchise strikeout record, has now moved into a tie with the former Marlin for the most quality starts in club history with 110. He threw 104 pitches over six innings to increase his MLB lead in innings pitched to 136.2.
“That’s kind of what he’s been doing,” McCullough said. “He induced a lot of soft contact and had really good stuff tonight.”
Alcantara’s lone blemish was a solo home run by Joey Ortiz in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game through regulation.
Henderson gave up three hits and one run with five strikeouts in five innings for the Brewers. Craig Yoho (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th inning of relief for his first major league win.
Lake Bachar was tagged with the loss in the 10th inning. He struck out the first two batters, but his first mistake proved fatal. Despite allowing a hit in eight consecutive innings, Pete Fairbanks made it through the ninth with two strikeouts and a scoreless frame. Michael Peterson also notched two strikeouts in a hitless eighth inning of work.
The Marlins will send All-Star RHP Max Meyer (9-1, 2.58 ERA) to the mound in hopes of ending the losing streak. The Brewers will counter with LHP Shane Drohan (4-3, 3.09) on Saturday.
