On the day the announcements were presented, Otto Lopez demonstrated why he was worthy of being selected as a National League All-Star shortstop.

Lopez went 3-for-5 with a home run and double to increase his MLB-leading batting average to .341 on the season. That, paired with a dominating start from Sandy Alcantara, led to the Miami Marlins dominating the Athletics 7-2 on Saturday to win their eighth game in their last 11.

Alcantara has now won seven straight starts after striking out a season-high eight batters over eight innings against the Athletics. Alcantara (10-4) allowed one run on six hits and issued only one walk. Tyler Zuber worked a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

Liam Hicks also collected three hits, while Joe Mack and Kyle Stowers each homered for the Marlins (48-42). Stowers has hit 10 home runs, 35 RBI with a .912 OPS, and 12 stolen bases in his last 40 games.

Hicks told the Marlins Radio Network after the game that what Alcantara has been doing since the start of June is “pretty special.”

“It’s awesome for the team too,” Hicks said. “You know you’re saving the bullpen that day. He’s just gonna go out and give you six innings like it’s nothing.”

The Marlins grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Mack opened the frame with a towering 449-foot home run off Aaron Civale (5-6). Hicks followed with a single before Lopez drove him home on a two-run homer to left-center field.

The Marlins added another run in the fifth after Hicks singled again and scored on a double by Lopez. The Marlins shortstop now has 38 multi-hit games before the All-Star break, extending a franchise record he set a day ago.

Stowers capped the Marlins' scoring in the seventh inning by hitting his 11th home run of the season, a solo blast off Kade Morris.

Alcantara cruised through the Athletics lineup for most of the night, retiring 11 of 12 batters during one stretch while consistently working ahead in the count. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.00 with another efficient outing. The Marlins ace has thrown eight innings for the second time this season.

Joshua Kuroda-Grauer and Carlos Cortes each had two hits for the Athletics, who dropped their fourth game in five contests and fell for the 10th time in 13 games. Civale surrendered four runs on seven hits while striking out six over 4 2/3 innings.

The series concludes Sunday, as the Marlins send out Eury Pérez (4-6, 4.21 ERA) to secure the sweep. The Athletics counter with left-hander Gage Jump (3-2, 2.29).
