MIAMI, Fla. – The Miami Marlins look to clinch a four-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Coming off back-to-back wins, the Marlins’ pitching staff has been the biggest standout. Janson Junk and Tyler Philips delivered high-quality starts and the bullpen didn’t allow extra runs. Along with an opportunity to clinch, the Marlins can keep climbing the National League standings.
For the visitors, former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara is listed to start on the mound. The 30-year-old is in the midst of a strong season. He’s produced a 3.82 ERA and a 11-6 record. Alcantara leads the league with 23 starts, 150.2 innings pitched, and 625 batters faced. He’s one of 12 pitchers to record a complete game and one of seven in a shutout.
Alcantara relies on seven pitches – sinker (25.7 percent), changeup (20.7 percent), four-seamer (19.5 percent), cutter (14.5 percent), sweeper (9.3 percent), slider (6.8 percent), and curveball (3.5 percent).
Marlins Manager Clayton McCollough has kept the two-time All-Star on the mound for at least six innings in 19 of 23 starts. Durability is far from the issue, but having a fresh bullpen will be a luxury entering Sunday’s game.
The Mets list righty Robert Stock as the probable pitcher. The 36-year-old will make his season debut. Stock hasn’t stepped on a major league mound since June 8, 2025, with the Boston Red Sox. He split a couple of stints in the minors between the Brooklyn Cyclones (High-A) and Syracuse Mets (AAA).
In 2025, Stock threw five different pitches – cutter (44.1 percent), sinker (32.2 percent), four-seamer (10.2 percent), sweeper (8.5 percent), and changeup (5.1 percent).
The Marlins homered in each game against the Mets – Kyle Stowers (two), Jakob Marsee (one), Javier Sanoja (one), and Griffin Conine (one). Given Stock’s past inconsistencies, slugging opportunities will likely be presented.
Outside of power hitting, the Marlins have consistently gotten on base in this series. They’re applying pressure to a Mets infield defense that currently ranks as the second-worst in the league.
Shortstop Francis Lindor has been the only consistent offensive threat to the Marlins. He’s logged five hits in 11 at-bats, including two runs batted in and two homers.
Otherwise, Alcantara should have another dominant outing on the mound.
