MIAMI, Fla. – Ahead of the Miami Marlins’ Tuesday 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at LoanDepot Park, Tyler Boronski spoke with former bullpen member Lake Bachar, who recalled the “mixed emotions” of getting traded and receiving the call a couple of minutes past the 6:00 p.m. deadline.
The 31-year-old spent three years with the South Florida organization, but the chapter came to a close in exchange for three prospects:
- Right-handed pitcher Brandan Bidois
- Outfielder Brian Sanchez
- Infielder Hyun Seung Lee
“I wasn’t truly sure [if I was going to be traded],” Bachar told Boronski. “As the time was coming through, six o’clock hit and I was like, ‘Okay, nothing’s happening.’ Then I end up getting the phone call [at 6:02].”
Bachar was with the team in an IMAX theatre watching The Odyssey when he heard the news and didn’t get to finish the film.
The Winfield, Illinois, native was originally drafted in the fifth round (No. 144) by the San Diego Padres. After eight years in the organization’s minor league system, Bachar was designated for assignment, and the Marlins picked him up. President Peter Bendix gave the reliever a legitimate chance in the majors.
Bachar produced a 3.88 ERA, a 9-5 record, and five saves with the Marlins in 139 innings. It’s been a week since the trade and he’s already returned to LoanDepot Park. Despite sitting in the visitor’s dugout this time, Bachar isn’t caught up in the emotions.
“I take every day like it’s brand new,” he said. “There’s no extra pressure in going against an old team and trying to get to the playoffs. Just take care of today’s business.”
The Marlins and Pirates are chasing the Philadelphia Phillies for the final Wild Card spot in the National League. Bachar didn’t play in Tuesday’s game, but he could appear at some point in the series and step on a familiar mound, but in a different uniform.
Manager Clayton McCullough and the clubhouse are familiar with the third-year major leaguer’s arsenal. He relies on six pitches:
- Four-seamer (29.5 percent)
- Slider (23 percent)
- Sweeper (18.1 percent)
- Curveball (15 percent)
- Split Finger (9.5 percent)
- Sinker (4.5 percent)
Bachar has appeared in two games as a member of the Pirates bullpen. He’s produced a 2.25 ERA, allowing two hits and an earned run (Milwaukee Brewers’ William Contreras solo homer), and struck out six batters.
There is currently a 3.5-game separation in the National League standings between the Marlins and Pirates. Outfielder Esteury Ruiz scored both runs – a solo homer and off a Jacob Gonzalez throwing error. The Marlins continue to close the Phillies’ gap, but the loss of Kyle Stowers (left hamstring strain) to the 10-day injured list makes the journey even more difficult.
Bachar’s Miami reunion could end up being bittersweet, but the main focus is the present rather than reminiscing on the past.
