The snow and the cold wiped out action earlier in the week of Jan. 26, but once everyone dug out, high school contests were back on schedule by mid-week in the Marion area.

Despite the weather and postponements, there were some performances of note held in the span.

To recognize those efforts the Marion Star is holding a pair of athlete of the week polls for boys and girls. The polls are open at MarionStar.com and its app and will remain so through the early morning of Feb. 8. Voters are encouraged to participate as often as allowed.

Here are the latest nominees:

Marion Star Girls Athlete of the Week for Feb. 2​


River Valley basketball's Gracie Beechum scored 18 points with seven steals in a win over Cardington.

Cardington basketball's Jill Bertke scored 12 points with 17 rebounds in a loss to River Valley.

Ridgedale basketball's Haleigh Townsend scored 14 points with eight rebounds in a win over Crestline.

Pleasant basketball's Brooklin Davis scored 18 points with five assists and three steals in a win over Shelby.

North Union basketball's Kennedy Harrah scored 20 points in a win over Indian Lake.

Northmor basketball's Shelby Cooper scored 22 points in a loss to Galion.

Elgin wrestler Hallie Winslow won the 130-pound weight class at the Bellefontaine Iron Maiden that drew 65 teams, as she went 5-0 for her title.

Marion Star Boys Athlete of the Week for Feb. 2​


Highland wrestler Cael Gilmore won the 165-pound weight class at the Delaware Hayes Rieman Invitiational, winning three matches by technical fall and two via pin.

Northmor wrestler Ethan Amens won the 120-pound weight class at the 47th Salley George Wrestling Invitational, doing so via three pins in 63 seconds or less.

Pleasant bowler Bryan Brandt rolled games of 224 and 202 for a 426 series in a win over Shelby.

North Union bowler Riley Otten fired a 233-190 423 series in a close loss to Indian Lake.

River Valley basketball's Carter Myers scored 38 points in a win over Galion and 37 points in a win over Highland.

Mount Gilead basketball's Cole Fricke made five 3-pointers for 15 points in a win over East Knox.

Marion Harding basketball's Caleb Metz scored 15 points with 15 rebounds in a win over Ontario.

In the girls poll, Pleasant basketball's Mary Aurigemma, who scored 19 points with 14 rebounds and four assists in a win over Marion Harding, earned 714 votes out of 1,641 cast for 44 percent to win it. Other nominees were Highland basketball's Addi Reichenbach, Beechum, Elgin basketball's Jordan Wall, Bertke and Pleasant bowler Breahna Howard.

In the boys poll, Pleasant basketball's Evan Sickmiller, who scored 21 points in a win over Ontario, earned 784 votes out of 2,185 cast for 36 percent to win it. Other nominees were Ridgedale basketball's Billy Wren, North Union bowler Keegan Donohue, Mount Gilead swimmer Evan Irons, River Valley basketball's Chase Smith, Elgin basketball's Colton Leonard, Pleasant bowler Tucker Ludwig and River Valley bowler Nolan Howard.
