Then there were 16. Thursday marks the beginning of the regional semifinal for the NCAA Tournament.

That means after today's and tomorrow's games, the Elite Eight will begin later this weekend. Then, it's onto the Final Four.

But first, let's check in on the dozen-plus teams still remaining. Some, such as Michigan, Duke and Arizona, are top seeds with high expectations. Other, like Arkansas or Illinois, are highly talented but had some low points in the season. Then there's Iowa and Texas men's basketball, who seemingly came from nowhere to pull off a few upsets and wind up in the Sweet 16.

One thing all the teams have in common? They come from the major conference. For the second year in a row, no midmajors made the regional semifinals.

NCAA Tournament schedule: The rest of March Madness​


March 26-27 is the Sweet 16. The winners of those games move on to the Elite Eight in those same cities that weekend.

When is the Final Four 2026?​


The Final Four and national championship will be played early next month at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The title game is April 6.

Who does Texas play next?​


The Longhorns will play Purdue, which finished tied for sixth in the Big Ten and has a 28-8 record. Purdue also owns an NET ranking of No. 9, two spots lower than Gonzaga, whom Texas just beat.
