The Toronto Maple Leafs are dealing with a difficult stretch both on and off the ice.
Toronto extended its losing streak to six games after a 6-2 defeat to the New York Rangers. Hours earlier, the team traded forward Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche, a move that reflected the club’s current situation. Roy did not play in the Rangers game, but he was part of the other five losses.
Head coach Craig Berube admitted the decision was not easy for the locker room.

“We knew this was coming,” Berube said, via NHL. “It’s a tight-knit group in there. They won’t be happy about it. But, again, we put ourselves in this situation, so this is what happens. … But, yeah, he was a guy we brought in, and he’s played pretty well for us. Tough to see him go, but that’s the situation we’re in.”

Toronto received a conditional first-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. Before his trade, Roy recorded 20 points this season with five goals and 15 assists in 59 games. The 29-year-old still has one year remaining on his contract with a $3 million cap hit.
Roy joined the Maple Leafs earlier this season in the trade that sent Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights. During his short time in Toronto, Roy provided depth and versatility across the lineup.
The Leafs’ struggles have continued on the ice. The six game losing streak began with a 4-2 defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto then lost to the Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, and New Jersey Devils before the latest loss to the Rangers.
Against New York, Toronto stayed competitive for the first 40 minutes but collapsed in the third period, allowing four goals. Berube expressed clear frustration with the team’s effort.
“Definitely frustrated, pissed off,” Berube said. “The games are right there, and we don’t push hard enough as a team to win them.”
Toronto now sits seventh in the Atlantic Division with a 27-25-11 record. The team averages 3.18 goals per game but allows 3.42, a gap that has hurt results during the recent skid.
