Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal that will fall just short of the British transfer record.

Forest had driven a hard bargain in the early weeks of the summer transfer window, determined to secure more than the £125 million ($170 million) that took Alexander Isak from Newcastle to Liverpool last summer.

The Athletic has reported that City, whose opening bid was rejected, have ultimately agreed a deal worth a staggering £116 million ($153.03 million) up front. The Premier League club had identified the 23-year-old as their primary target this summer and, despite Anderson's hefty price tag, remained undeterred.

City's previous club record stood at the £100 million ($134.5 million) they spent to secure Jack Grealish in 2021, a figure they will now surpass to land Anderson.

Anderson has been granted permission to undergo a medical in New York on Friday, with the deal still contingent on personal terms being finalized. Thomas Tuchel has already stated that he will not prevent his players from completing transfers during the World Cup, as per The Mirror.

Anderson joined Forest in 2023 in a £35 million ($46.1 million) move from Newcastle United, who were reluctant to part ways with the midfielder who had graduated from their academy.

Since making the switch, he has continued to flourish and was always set to deliver a massive profit for Forest. Anderson made his England debut in September and has started both FIFA World Cup fixtures so far — lining up alongside Declan Rice against Croatia and Ghana — and is expected to retain his place against Panama on Saturday.

City have entered their post-Pep Guardiola era with Enzo Maresca anticipated to take over as the new head coach at the Etihad. Anderson is viewed as a strong fit within their setup and will additionally assist in fulfilling their homegrown quota.

The Manchester club are also mindful of the fact that Rodri, now 30, is persistently linked with Real Madrid and could contemplate his future once his contract runs out.

City have found it difficult to integrate central midfielders into their squad in recent seasons. Kalvin Phillips serves as a prime example of a highly-regarded English player who relocated to Manchester but struggled for playing time due to Rodri's dominance.

Nevertheless, with the likes of Bernardo Silva leaving, Anderson is poised to assume a significant role as City look to guarantee a seamless transition following Guardiola's departure.
