It’s hard to know exactly what to make of this because it’s still quite early, but the NCAA is working on new guidelines about international players and eligibility.
These have apparently not been released yet, but if this is what it is, it’ll be significant. This is from a statement given to SI.com by the NCAA.
“Actual and necessary expenses continue to be a factor in a prospect’s eligibility, but as part of that broader effort to update preenrollment rules, the NCAA also identified several international leagues in which participation by a prospect is likely to result in violations of NCAA rules and a loss of eligibility.
“The Association is modernizing the rule book in several ways to ensure college sports are played by college athletes and not used as a fallback for professional athletes, and the age-based eligibility model now under consideration is designed to address many member schools’ concerns regarding eligibility.”
Most people would probably be okay with that, more or less, but here’s the question: when would it kick in?
Because if it kicks in this fall, there will be riots.
Just kidding. Not literal riots, other than possibly in Baton Rouge, but coaches will be pissed, and rightly so.
Duke, for example, will have three international players. We don’t think Maxime Meyer would have much to worry about, but Dame Sarr? Joaquim Boumtje Bouomtje?
They could have issues.
Of course, it would be just like the NCAA to roll this far into the 21st century and still be completely tone deaf. Rosters are built, money is spent. It would be a catastrophic thing to do to the entire sport, and obviously, lawsuits would be filed across the country.
We get the point of it, and also the age limit. But making a major rule change over the summer when no one can react or adjust, would the height of arrogance, not to mention stupidity. No one will be happy but the lawyers.
