Southern California sprinter Madison Whyte delivered a record-breaking performance at the Mt. SAC Relays, highlighting a strong weekend for the Trojans.
The Newport News native and Heritage High School alum set a new school record in the 400 meters, clocking a time of 49.64 seconds at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. The mark broke the previous record of 49.99 set by Kendall Ellis in 2018 and ranks as the ninth-fastest time in NCAA history.
Whyte now owns the second-fastest 400-meter time in the NCAA this season.
She also played a key role in Southern California’s women’s 4x100-meter relay team, which tied for the third-fastest time in NCAA history at 42.12 seconds. The relay team — consisting of Christine Mallard, Mia Brahe-Pedersen, Whyte and Brianna Selby — broke the previous school record of 42.21 set in 2019.
Whyte’s performance was part of a standout day for the Trojans, who recorded two school records, four event wins and 13 top-three finishes during the meet.
Distance runners also contributed to the team’s success, competing in the 1,500 and 400 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational to round out a strong overall showing for Southern California.
