The Minnesota Lynx defeated the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, July 8, helping head coach Cheryl Reeve break the record for regular-season career wins.
Minnesota defeated the Sun 86-80, which helped Reeve capture a record-breaking 380 regular-season career wins, which is one more than former Mystics head coach Mike Thibault.
Thibault finished his coaching career with 379 career wins, and his son Eric Thibault is one of Reeve's assistant coaches. After the game, the Lynx head coach spoke about her record-breaking night.
"This is overwhelming," Reeve said at the press conference on July 8.
"It feels like yesterday, you know, it was 2010. We were trying to be a successful team. I recognize it wasn't just yesterday. We're walking in the Connecticut arena and just reminiscing with Weey and Brunson, and you know, weey in particular when she was here, and you know, and it really starts to hit you," she added.
Reeve became the head coach of the Lynx in 2010. Since becoming the franchise's head coach, she has been named WNBA Coach of the Year four times and has led the organization to four WNBA championships.
Minnesota is tied with the Houston Comets and Seattle Storm for the most championships in league history. Throughout the press conference, she continued to reflect on her journey to winning 380 games.
"You never dream it's going to happen," she said. "I set out to just try to take it day by day and win games. What I feel is an overwhelming sense of feeling blessed for all the people who let me be me. Believed in what we were doing and found a way to be successful no matter what. I feel incredibly blessed for all the people that have been a part of this journey, small or large," she added.
The Lynx sit at the top of the league rankings at No. 1 with a 16-6 record. Rookie Olivia Miles and veteran Natasha Howard have been named as starters in the WNBA All-Star Game.
Minnesota guard Courtney Williams was named as a reserve for the All-Star Game. The team has been playing without its superstar, Napheesa Collier, who has ramped up her basketball activity.
The franchise will play its next game on Saturday, July 11, against the New York Liberty at 1 p.m. CST on ABC, and the season series is 1-1, with the final series game on September 18.
