Lucas Bergvall has formally informed Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to leave the club. According to The Athletic, the 20-year-old Swedish international has made it clear to the North London hierarchy that he is seeking a fresh challenge. Bergvall’s decision follows a 2025/26 campaign spent largely on the periphery. While he initially became a fan favourite after his £8.5 million move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Djurgarden in 2024, his progress has stalled amid a series of managerial changes culminating in the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi. The midfielder has struggled for meaningful game time under the Italian, often limited to short, second-half substitute appearances late last season. Adding to his frustrations over limited involvement, Bergvall’s camp is well aware of Tottenham’s ongoing transfer activity.

Recognising that De Zerbi’s midfield overhaul could push him further down the pecking order, Bergvall has chosen to proactively address his future. Despite his challenging club situation, Bergvall’s stock remains high in the European market. He is currently on international duty, representing Sweden at the 2026 World Cup in North America, where he recently made his tournament debut off the bench in a 5-1 group-stage victory over Tunisia and even supplied an assist. Chelsea and Aston Villa have previously enquired about a move, but Spurs considered him untouchable at the time—a stance that has since changed. However, it remains to be seen if either of the aforementioned clubs will revisit their interest in Bergvall.
