LSU had a home-and-home series scheduled with Arizona State for the 2029 and 2030 seasons. But news broke today that LSU has, in fact, canceled those games. This decision is a result of having to play nine SEC opponents going forward. The impact of this new schedule will likely lead to fewer out-of-conference matchups between Power Four opponents.
This also is not the first time LSU has canceled a home game with Arizona State. In 2005, LSU had to move its home opener from Death Valley to Tempe due to the impacts of Hurricane Katrina. The series was then rescheduled for the 2015 and 2016 seasons before the two schools mutually agreed to push it back again to the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The schools would later move the series once more to the 2029 and 2030 seasons, which have now been canceled.
It would have been an intriguing matchup no matter when it was played. The 2022 and 2023 seasons could have seen Jayden Daniels match up against his former school, and that would have been an interesting storyline to follow at the time. As of now, this decision makes the most sense for LSU. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the SEC approaches future matchups with other out-of-conference schools.
