LSU baseball needs a win on Sunday to avoid a sweep. The Tigers opened SEC play with a 13-12 loss at Vanderbilt on Friday night. After the Tigers roared back from a 10-4 deficit, Vanderbilt had some heroics of its own, crushing a walk-off home run vs. LSU reliever Gavin Guidry.
Saturday's game wasn't as competitive. LSU fell 11-3. It was tight early, but Vanderbilt blew it open with six runs in the fifth inning. The big inning has killed LSU of late, and it was an issue again on Saturday night. LSU starter Cooper Moore had his worst outing of the year, allowing four earned runs in four innings. He struck out four and walked two.
LSU coach Jay Johnson was forced to use four relievers in the loss. Where does that leave LSU's pitching staff entering Sunday?
LSU will need starter William Schmidt to make it through five innings, at least. The Tigers don't want to be cycling through bullpen options for a third-straight day.
The good news is the cupboard isn't bare. A few of LSU's top arms should be available. Mavrick Rizy is yet to pitch in this series. Guidry, after throwing 32 pitches on Friday night, should be good to give LSU something on Sunday.
Zac Cowan tossed 41 pitches on Friday. It would be understandable if Johnson opts to rest Cowan, but given how he pitched in Game 1, LSU might need him today.
Here's a complete look at how LSU's pitching staff shapes up entering Game 3.
