when wiz said he was the judge & jury, I thought he meant that about ASU & DK, not Wade.

ASU could have done more before fatal shooting

Let's get one thing straight about the media's coverage of the tragic incident in which Sun Devil football player Loren Wade shot and killed former Sun Devil Brandon Falkner. To my knowledge, no one is blaming football Coach Dirk Koetter or Athletic Director Gene Smith for Falkner's death. Wade bears the ultimate responsibility for his actions. We all understand that. What we are finding out is that Wade was a time bomb waiting to explode. A volatile young man who seemed destined to snap at any time.

The message that I believe is being put out there - and one that seems to be backed up by the call for an investigation into the incident by President Michael Crow - is that ASU may not have handled the situation the right way.

There were too many red flags, too many warning signs that Wade needed help. Those signs seemed to be ignored. No one could have known what Wade was capable of. No one could have ever thought he was capable of killing another human being. I understand that. But coaches and athletic directors shouldn't be the judge of a violent person's frame of mind. That needs to be handled by professionals.

While I don't blame Koetter, I do believe the head coach failed to take the proper action with the information he had about his player's behavior.

Saw this on ESPN.com

The preliminary hearing for Loren Wade, the former Arizona State running back who has been charged with first-degree murder of another former Sun Devils player, was postponed Monday because he has not been assigned a public defender.

Wade, 21, is being held without bond on suspicion of murder in the death of Brandon Falkner, 25, of Tempe, who was shot in the head early March 26 as he sat in his car outside a popular hip-hop nightclub in south Scottsdale.

Yep. I watched it. He still claims that he saw his girlfriend get out of a vehicle and he confronted the driver. After he and "the guy" exchanged words, Wade claims that the gun "just went off" when he punched at the driver (Brandon). He claims he never intended to use his gun and did not **** it that night. Witnesses, according to police, say that Brandon did not speak to Wade, that Wade did **** the weapon, walk up to the vehicle, and shoot the driver in cold blood.

Wade investigation committee set

A retired judge and a Fortune 500 CEO will be working with ASU employees and a student to assess how the University handled issues concerning Loren Wade.

Law professor Myles Lynk selected seven members for the committee who "bring to [the panel] the benefit of their various backgrounds."

Wade is charged with the murder of former ASU football player Brandon Falkner. The Athletic Department came under fire following the incident for not catching warning signs about Wade, including threats he made to other athletes.

Lynk said the committee was made up of strong people.

"All of the members are independent thinkers and are vitally concerned about this community," he said.

Wade's trial set for Jan.

Loren Wade, the Arizona State tailback accused of shooting another former ASU player outside a Scottsdale nightclub in March, will go on trial Jan. 10, 2006, in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Wade, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brandon Falkner, 25, who played defensive back at ASU before being dismissed from the team in 2002. Wade reportedly reacted when he saw Falkner talking to a former girlfriend.

The case will be tried in Judge Douglas Rayes' courtroom. Prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty, although sources inside the Maricopa County Attorney's Office say that there are no apparent aggravating factors that would warrant it. advertisement

Then, if convicted, Wade would face a sentence of natural life in prison, or life with a chance of parole after 25 years, unless the jury found him guilty of a lesser offense, such as second-degree murder.
