Knowing our current QB situation, most of the "experts" had pegged us to take Derek Carr with our first round pick.

We went with Bucannon instead.

Buchannon has been good but think how good carr has been for a crappy raiders team.

I know its a what if... in the line with many other what ifs but so many people thought we were gonna take him.

On the Cardinals, Derek Carr = Logan Thomas. And with Palmer's new contract that keeps Carr on the bench for multiple years. A waste of a first round pick.

Well, we also passed on Manziel and passed on Bridgewater TWICE and they were both more highly rated than Carr.

There's no point in bitching about it. Bucannon is going to be a good pro, which is what you ultimately hope for with a first pick.

Bucannon will be fine. Recall that he's playing out of position.

At least Bucannon is playing. Carr would have been sitting the bench(well until now) and would have been a wasted pick.

I know buccanon is playing well

point is more that in this situation carr would be playing instead of a logan thomas and a ryan lindley... carr has looked good since week 1 with raiders.

Gotta agree on taking a QB. Now this year we have to take a QB in the first two rounds. After Palmer we have nothing at QB. I think this should be a top priority this offseason

Well, we have been saying this for YEARS since Leinart was picked. The cards haven't taken the plunge on drafting a QB high since then. Don't know if it's a Keim thing, or not, but we seem gunshy when it comes to drafting QBs and draft safer picks instead.

Yea. They have not drafted the way I see it forever. Every year I want a pass rusher and they don't draft one. I want to add a QB, OG and RB to the list this year. I doubt they draft any. I would like to keep Stanton as our third string QB though.

Come on now you can't predict injuries. No team in the NFL is going to survive playing its 3rd string QB

I agree, sitting on the bench for a few years makes for a wasted pick,

Except this years QB menu from the draft blows chunks.

100% true. Winston is the only one with a chance and who knows how he'll be off the field.

Jax friend was over for dinner Sunday night and we were talking QB's. He said about the best coming down the line is Hackenberg from PSU, which is a scary thought. Obviously some will develop and emerge but it's not looking good.

As for Mariota, he has to be in the right system. Like me, he's not a Mariota fan, but there are others in the org. that really like him.

I love Buchannon. He is a hitter and a great fit for our D and I love his work ethic and humility, very refreshing. I see him as a future All Pro.

But given Palmer's age and health, I don't see him as long term. Derek Carr is leaps and bounds ahead of Logan Thomas, Ryan Lindley, and Drew Stanton and has a very bright future. The skill set he is starting out with as a rookie is solid and will only get better.

Hindsight being what it is, I think we would have been better off picking Derek Carr. QB is such a high impact position as we have seen. As good as Buchannon is, I think we missed the boat here.

Yeah I'm surprised how well Carr has played. I like Deonne quite a bit but in hindsight taking Carr as the QBOF would have been a great move too. Quite frankly he'd be playing now, I think he would have eventually beaten out Stanton as the backup the way he's looked on a bad raiders team.

He's got a ways to go, not consistently accurate yet, YPA is low, too many picks but he's a rookie on a very bad team and has 20 TD passes and over 3000 yards.

To be fair, you have no idea how he'd be playing "in position" because he's played 0 snaps at safety this year.

I'm fine with taking Bucannon over Carr.

IMO Marcus M is a 3 year guy. Either 3 years for his game to evolve to the pro set or 3 years until he is exposed and/or injured.

Oh for a do over and Zach Mettenberg 2/3.

If Bucannon can develop into a player like Cam Chancelor, we are in good shape. If he turns into Taylor Mays, not so much. I think he has the ability but a lot of being successful is what you do with your ability.

We don't win 11 games without Bucannon. He has filled in major chunks in our defense from time to time.

Quite frankly I think Franklin (no pun intended) the new head coach at PSU is going to ruin Hackenburg if Hackenburg doesn't get out of dodge. You can't insert a pro style in the pocket QB into a spread, pistol, offense that requires your QB to be just as much a runner as a passer which Hackenburg is not.

FWIW, Andy Dalton ran a ton of read option stuff at TCU, and I think that Nick Foles had at least a season with Rich Rod at Arizona. It's not ideal, but it's possible.

He's already way ahead of Mays. I liked Mays alot in college but it was apparent very early on that he just couldn't cover anybody and it kept him off the field except in special teams. He had a big sack last night, first of his career.

Deonne is not a great cover guy by any stretch but he has been on the field all year, Mays was never that good.

I do wonder if he'll be playing a similar hybrid role next year though. With HB healthy his ability to cover both as a CB and a S allows us to play 5 DB's

Not sure how familiar you are with PSU football however being close to it here in Pa and watching most of their games this past season you could see the regression with Hackenburg from the previous year under O'Brian. If you get a chance watch the Pinstripe bowl, PSU is in it against Mitch's Boston College.

RichRod came the season after Foles graduated. Matt Scott was his first QB.
