The New York Jets will have to assess multiple options at quarterback this offseason. Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn are tasked with bringing in a new starter after the failed Justin Fields experiment in 2025. It's going to be a tough position to solve in a shallow NFL draft class, meaning veteran options should garner consideration.
The Jets will assess quarterbacks who have connections to the current coaching staff. For example, new offensive coordinator Frank Reich has ties to Kirk Cousins and Jacoby Brissett, two quarterbacks who may be available this offseason. There's another connection that sticks out as notable.
Former Raiders and Saints quarterback Derek Carr is allegedly considering coming out of retirement, according to national reports. Carr would apparently weigh possibilities for the "right coaching staff." Well, the Jets just hired quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, who worked with the retired QB closely.
Musgrave was Carr's offensive coordinator for his second and third season (2015-16). Carr took a massive developmental step forward as a sophomore, his first under Musgrave. It was arguably his best overall campaign, with a career-high 32 touchdown passes en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.
Carr still thinks highly of Musgrave, given their shared connection. The recent report that indicates Carr is weighing a potential return to the NFL is worth following closely for the Jets. Musgrave's appointment could make the Jets a realistic option if Carr comes back.
