Local baseball and softball teams spent spring break week on the move. Astoria, Warrenton and Knappa teams traveled all around Oregon, while the Seaside girls softball team is currently spending time in the Arizona sun. Overall, spring break week showed more good results than bad.
Astoria girls bats wake up
It took a few games, but the bats finally woke up for the Astoria girls softball team.
After scoring a combined four runs in the first two games, the Fishermen exploded with 44 runs in their four games at The Dalles Tournament. Though the bats showed up, the Fishermen dropped the most important game of the weekend slate.
Thursday, the Fishermen took care of business against Cottage Grove and La Grande by a combined score of 31-9. Those two games consisted of every girl on the roster contributing offensively. Hailee Svensen and Lyla Carlson led the way against Cottage Grove with three hits apiece, while Kilee Svensen had two. Carlson led the team with three runs batted in to boot. Game two against La Grande saw the Fishermen tally 16 hits, including seven of the position players with at least two hits and every position player reaching base.
Friday was the day of heavyweights.
The first game was a playoff rematch against a fully reloaded The Dalles squad. After losing multiple players to 6A programs over the last couple of years, The Dalles have the look of a state title contender so far, even this early in the season.
This game played out exactly as expected. The Fishermen and Riverhawks went back and forth throughout the whole seven inning affair.
Astoria struck first in the top of the second behind a Kysa Whitsett double, then The Dalles struck back with three in the bottom of the third. A two-run shot by Carlson in the fourth tied things back up. Astoria would take the lead on a passed ball and looked to be on their way to victory, but The Dalles struck back behind a home run from Maddy Sagapolutele in the fifth. Things were even until The Dalles broke the seal with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to hand Astoria their first loss of the year.
The Dalles moved to 8-0 after the win and No. 1 in the latest 4A standings.
Things didn’t get any easier for Astoria as the team took on reigning 3A state champion Scio.
Scio entered the game on a 19-game winning streak, but Astoria struck early and was able to hang on. The Fishermen raced out to a 5-0 lead after two innings only to see Scio continue to battle back until the game became 9-8. But the Fishermen were able to close things out.
Despite not using normal pitcher Taryn Wray, senior Kate Barendse did enough to keep Scio behind. The senior went 5 ⅓ innings before giving way to Wray. Wray then obliterated the side, striking out four of the five batters she faced.
After facing stiff competition, the Fishermen went 3-1 and now sit 5-1 overall. Their tough stretch of games continues as they take on Banks Tuesday at CMH Field.
Warrenton softball has a good weekend
Warrenton softball matched Astoria with a 3-1 record.
The Warriors took part in the CU Spring Bash in La Grande. Warrenton started things off with a 9-6 victory over Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa on Friday, then doubled back to put the hurt on Burns/Crane, winning 12-2. Then the Warriors split their Saturday games against Irrigon and Vale. Warrenton beat Irrigon 11-1, before losing to Vale, 11-1.
After the weekend of action, Warrenton is 5-2 and No.12 in the 3A rankings.
The standout for Warrenton at the plate was sophomore Natalie Davis. Davis went a combined 7-8 with seven RBIs in the Warriors’ victories over Burns and Irrigon. Natalie Pike and Lucy Smith also had strong games at the plate throughout the tournament.
Warrenton is set to return home to play in front of the home crowd for the first time this year on Wednesday. The Warriors will play a double header against Portland Adventist Academy. Game one is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
Mixed results for Knappa softball
Knappa softball was busy this past week with five games.
The Loggers traveled to Eastern Oregon for spring break and came home with a 2-3 overall record.
Knappa defeated Irrigon twice with scores of 15-3 and 7-5. Then, the Loggers fell to Echo/Stanfield 17-3 and got defeated by Heppner with scores of 13-2 and 16-0.
Currently, the Loggers are 2-4 so far on the season and have another road game against Rainier this coming Wednesday.
Warrenton baseball strong in Medford
Warrenton baseball made the most of a trip to Medford, as the team finished 2-1 overall. Their lone loss was to a strong 4A Junction City team, currently ranked No. 1 in the boys 4A division.
Warrenton started off with a 7-3 win over Baker, then lost 7-2 to Junction City and beat Sisters 11-1.
In their 7-3 win over Baker, it was a team effort on the mound as Ryan Palmer, Aaron Neahring, RJ Thornton and Dylan Ballard combined to hold the Bulldogs in check. At the plate, Jackson Simonsen and Finley Marshall led the way with two RBIs apiece. Marshall again was the lone offensive bright spot against Junction City as he had the only two hits for Warrenton in the game. The third game saw three Warriors with at least two hits, while Palmer and Neahring pitched well on the mound.
Currently, the Warriors are ranked No. 6 in the 3A standings and boast a 3-1 record. The Warriors are set for a difficult two-game stretch to wrap up nonleague play with games against Tillamook and Scappoose. Warrenton travels to Tillamook for a Tuesday game, then returns to the diamond on Friday where they will face a strong Scappoose squad.
Astoria boys drop two
It was a 1-2 road trip for the Astoria boys baseball team at The Dalles.
The Fishermen started things off well with a 4-3 victory against Philomath, then let a game slip away against Gladstone. Things finished off for Astoria last Wednesday with a 14-6 loss against Henley.
Overall, the Fishermen now sit at 1-3 and will look to get things going as they have two home games to start the week. Astoria took on Naselle of Washington State this past Monday and will take on Yamhill-Carlton at Tapiola Park on Tuesday. The game against Yamhill is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m.
Seaside boys fall in Madras
Seaside baseball went 1-2 in Madras.
The Seagulls fell to Mazama 6-4, then defeated Culver by a score of 7-3 and lost 10-0 to Crook County. These losses pushed Seaside’s record to 3-3 on the year.
In their win against Culver, the Seagulls had strong offensive games from Hayden Halsen and Kane Israel. The junior pair combined to go 3-4 at the plate with a home run and four runs batted in. Halsen hit his first home run of the season and also stole a base, while Israel hit a double and also reached base a third time via being hit by a pitch.
Knappa boys rebound
After an uncharacteristic slow start, the Loggers turned things around over the weekend with a pair of victories.
The team rebounded from their 21-2 loss against Ilwaco to defeat Irrigon and Union at the Spring Bash in La Grande.
Knappa defeated Irrigon 10-5 and Union by a score of 13-7.
The Loggers now sit at 2-2 on the season and will look to continue the momentum with a pair of games against Country Christian this Friday.
