The only question regarding Seaside boys golf coming into this season wasn’t would they be able to rebuild, the question was how long would it take? Based on the results of their most recent tournament, the Seagulls are getting ready for takeoff.

Competing in yet another high profile tournament featuring three of the four reigning state champions and the top four ranked 4A teams from last season, the Seagulls showed they will once again be right in the midst of state title contention. The Marshfield Invitational at Emerald Valley on Wednesday, provided the young Gulls with another good test.

Seaside shot a team score of 346, which was good enough to tie for eighth place with reigning 5A State Champion Corvallis and the top ranked team in 4A this season, Marshfield. The 3A juggernaut, Bandon, put on a clinic as their golfers took the victory with a team score of 312. Madras was the first 4A team with a third place finish and total score of 335. It was followed by Marist Catholic, finishing fifth with a score of 338.

Xanh Quang led the way for Seaside with a 74. Will Haag shot an 88, Landon Nofield carded an 89 and Gunner Norman finished with a 95. Freshman Fischer Stevenson was Seaside’s fifth player with a score of 105.

Head coach Jim Poetsch was happy with his team’s performance and said that his team is trending up.

“In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, we are getting close to being rebuilt,” Poetsch said in a press release Thursday. “Today showed we can compete with the best of the 4A schools and I don’t think that we are at our best golf of the season yet. But I really like the direction we are heading.

“Xanh had another solid round, finishing fifth amongst some really good golfers. Will and Landon each gave us a score in the eighties. For three of our guys playing here for the first time, I felt we played pretty well. We need to work on pitching out of the long sticky grass around these raised greens, but otherwise we moved it around the course pretty well.”

Next up for the Seagulls is a match at the friendly confines of Gearhart Golf Links on April 16. The match will be a Cowapa League battle with Tillamook.

Consistency key for Astoria boys golf

Oftentimes, sport is a game of consistency. So far, the Astoria boys golf team has embodied this.

Though the Fishermen don’t have a standout golfer who can shoot super low, they have a five-man lineup with all five shooting in the high 80s or low 90s. This has proven vital in two recent Cowapa league matchups against Scappoose and Tillamook.

Taking on the Cheesemakers Tuesday at Alderbrook Golf Course, the Fishermen used consistency to take home a three-stroke victory. The 368 to 371 victory was Astoria’s second consecutive to start league play. Also, their team score of 368 was a 19 stroke improvement from a previous match against Scappoose, when they shot a 387. Much like their Clatsop County rivals, the Fishermen are trending in the right direction as the season progresses.

Junior Ty Cereghino led the way with an 87 and second place overall finish. Senior Sawyer Rochon was the second scorer with a 92, senior Benjamin Murdock was the third with a 94 and junior Dominic Rico carded a 95 to round out the Fishermen’s lineup. Freshman Sam Bacon carded a 109 to finish as the fifth player.

Jonah Corbus of Tillamook took home the individual title with an 85.

Astoria continue its league schedule with a match against St. Helens next Tuesday, April 14 at Three Rivers Golf Course.

Seaside girls take the three-way victory

Seaside girls golfers continued their winning ways with a victory over Tillamook and Astoria on Monday.

The 398 for Seaside allowed the team to cruise home to a 37 stroke victory over Tillamook. Astoria finished third with a score of 523.

The Seagulls had balanced scores from four of their golfers as they all finished within the top six. Reagan Hartnett and Kylie Keranen led the way with a 95, Makenna White was right behind with a 96 and Lolly Rahl shot a 112. Much like the boys, the Seaside girl golfers are well positioned to compete for a league championship and can definitely shoot lower as they have the potential to get all four scorers around the low- to mid-90s by season’s end. Hayley Archibald was the fifth player with a score of 145.

Ava Miller of Tillamook took the individual title with a score of 93.

Astoria was led by Jane Phillips, Hadley Painter and Lina Lee. Phillips finished ninth overall with a score of 126, Painter finished 10th with a 127 and Lee carded a 130. The fourth scorer for Astoria was Kendall Ewing with a 140. Khloe Painter was the fifth player with a score of 149.
