Olympic relay champion Lisa Tertsch has become the first German athlete to win the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS).
Tertsch clinched the title with a second season victory in Sunday's finale in Wollongong, Australia, winning 14 seconds from Italy's Bianca Seregni and 26 seconds clear of Emma Lombardi of France.
Tertsch, who had also won the first of eight season races in Abu Dhabi, rose from fourth to first in the overall standings she won from French athlete Leonie Periault and Briton Beth Potter.
Potter had topped the bill together with French Olympic champion and title holder Cassandre Beaugrand heading into the final event but the 2023 champion Potter had to settle for 16th and Beaugrand did not finish.
"I noticed what was happening around me, but tried to stay calm and run my own race. That was tough," Tertsch said.
"I can't believe it. I didn't expect this. I am absolutely overwhelmed."
The 2025 WTCS consisted of five races in the standard distance of 1.5km swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running which is also used at the Olympics, and three sprint events over half the distances.
