Allen Park — In addition to getting poked in the eye during Monday's practice — the first padded session of training camp — Detroit Lions running back Sione Vaki also had his nose broken, coach Dan Campbell explained Tuesday morning.
"He's going to be out for a little bit here," Campbell added. "We're hopeful. Vision should be OK in time. We're not gonna have him here today, just gonna let him kind of recover a little bit. So, we think he'll be OK. He's just gonna need a minute here.
"Just one of those freak things, somehow a hand gets through the facemask. It was unbelievable."
Vaki, with star running back Jahmyr Gibbs holding in for a contract extension, had been splitting reps on the first-team offense with Isiah Pacheco. Without Vaki, and until Gibbs returns to practice, expect the Lions to lean on Jacob Saylors and Jabari Small.
▶ TE Anthony Firkser (fibula): Firkser left early from Monday's practice with a leg injury. Campbell said it's a fractured fibula for the tight end, "so he'll be out, obviously." The Lions brought back Zach Horton, an undrafted free agent in 2025, to replace Firkser.
▶ WE Lawrence Keys (hamstring): Keys, signed in June, "had a little bit of a hammy" issue pop up during Monday's practice.
