Allen Park — Following their first practice of training camp on Wednesday, the Detroit Lions placed offensive lineman Giovanni Manu on the active/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, which is meant for players who suffer injuries away from the team.
The timing of Manu's placement on the list, given his participation in Wednesday's practice, was odd. Lions coach Dan Campbell provided some clarity Thursday morning.
"He had an injury, a previous injury over the summer, that was not disclosed," Campbell said. "He came off the practice field (on Wednesday), didn't feel good, got it checked. Sure enough, that's what it was. So, he will be out for a period of time. I don't know how long that's going to be. Call it 12 weeks. Fourteen weeks. I don't know. We'll figure it out down the road, but he is NFI."
Manu, entering his fourth season, was expected to compete for a depth role during this year's training camp. The Lions are likely to start Penei Sewell and rookie Blake Miller at their tackle spots, with veteran Larry Borom serving as the top backup.
▶ DE Payton Turner (back): Campbell opened his news conference by saying Turner, signed by the Lions this offseason, was "probably going to sit out" of Thursday's practice in Allen Park with a stiff back, "but we don't think that'll be anything serious."
