Giovanni Manu’s third NFL training camp may be over almost as soon as it began.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell revealed Thursday morning that the developmental offensive lineman is expected to miss roughly three months with an injury that existed before players reported to Allen Park.
According to Campbell, Manu had been dealing with an undisclosed issue from earlier in the summer. He came off the field following Wednesday’s opening training camp practice, underwent additional testing and received a crushing recovery timeline.
“He will be out for a period of time. Call it 12,14 weeks,” Campbell said.
The Lions placed Manu on the active/non-football injury list shortly after Wednesday’s practice but provided no immediate explanation.
Campbell’s update makes the situation far more serious than a routine early-camp precaution.
A 12-to-14-week absence would keep Manu sidelined through most of October and potentially into November. Even after he is medically cleared, the 6-foot-7, 350-pound lineman would need time to rebuild his conditioning and prepare for live football.
That makes a meaningful role during the first half of the season extremely unlikely.
Detroit traded up to select Manu in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, fully understanding he would require patience.
The former University of British Columbia standout entered the league with rare size and athletic potential but limited experience against NFL-level competition. Every practice repetition matters as the Lions determine whether he can develop into a dependable tackle or versatile reserve.
Manu appeared in four games and made one start during the 2025 season. Training camp was supposed to give him a chance to show how much progress he had made entering Year 3.
Instead, he will spend another extended stretch away from the practice field.
That is the brutal part of Campbell’s update. Manu is not only losing games. He is losing the daily technical work required to close the gap between intriguing prospect and trusted NFL lineman.
Manu’s absence removes one of Detroit’s largest and most athletic depth options from an offensive line already sorting through several new combinations.
Penei Sewell remains the foundation, while Blake Miller and the team’s other reserve linemen will receive additional opportunities at tackle. Larry Borom, Devin Cochran and Colby Sorsdal could also benefit from the available snaps.
The Lions will likely continue evaluating outside options as roster cuts approach. A contender cannot afford to enter the season without enough protection behind its starters.
