Lionel Messi underwent scans on his left hamstring, which forced him out of Inter Miami's win over Philadelphia, just weeks before Argentina begin their World Cup defence.

Miami confirmed the 38-year-old had suffered "physical discomfort" before being substituted late in Sunday's 6-4 MLS victory.

He clutched at his hamstring after taking a free-kick and headed straight down the tunnel after being replaced.

A brief statement on the club website said: "After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

"The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress."

Messi, who has appeared in five World Cups, has said he would only play in the tournament if fully healthy.

Argentina start the defence of their World Cup crown against Algeria in just over three weeks on June 16.

They are due to face Honduras in College Station, Texas, on June 6 and Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, as part of their preparations.
