Lexington Minutemen football and Lexington High School has suffered an unbelievable loss.

Head football coach and assistant principal Andrew Saris unexpectedly passed away on Tuesday, June 30. He was 38 years old.

“We are writing with incredibly heavy hearts to share that we have lost one of our own,” Lexington athletic director Jeff Eichorn wrote in a message to parents and students via FinalForms. “Andrew Saris, our head football coach and assistant principal for grades 7-12, has passed away.

“Andrew was so much more than his titles. He was a mentor, a steady presence, and someone who believed in each of you, on the field and off it. His impact on this program and this school goes far deeper than any record or role.”

In 2025, Saris completed his fourth season with the football team, leading the Minutemen to a 9-2 record and the outright Ohio Cardinal Conference title, the program's first league championship since 2016 and the first outright title since 2008.

He was named the Division III Northwest District Co-Coach of the Year.

Saris was a 2005 Smithville graduate who played football and ran track for the Smithies. He was an All-Ohio defensive back and helped his teams play for a state championship in 2002.

The football team is planning to meet, with grief counselors available, along with the entire teaching and administrative staff of Lexington Schools.

“Lean on each other. Check on your teammates. This is exactly the kind of community Coach Saris helped build,” Eichorn wrote in the message. “Please keep Coach Saris’ family in your thoughts and prayers.”
