LeBron James' former teammate identifies where he can win two more rings, and it's not Warriors, Cavs, Heat originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
LeBron James is officially on the market as an unrestricted free agent after his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers expired.
His agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN's Shams Charania that James will continue his legendary career elsewhere, which prompted an official farewell message on Tuesday from Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss. She publicly thanked him for an eight-season tenure that included a championship won “under the toughest imaginable circumstances."
Even before that official goodbye, the Golden State Warriors were already generating more free agency buzz than any other team in the league, such as the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. Their front office is aggressively exploring ways to build a "Big Four" by pairing James with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and big man Anthony Davis, who is currently involved in heavy trade chatter.
Amid these blockbuster rumors, former Lakers center Dwight Howard suggested a very different destination for James. Howard, who won a championship alongside James in 2020, posted on X, "Should LeBron go to the spurs. I think he wins two more if he goes. What yall think?"

Howard’s idea actually makes a lot of sense when you look at how the basketball pieces fit. San Antonio Spurs just made a run to the NBA Finals behind Victor Wembanyama, who even won West Finals MVP, before losing to the New York Knicks in Game 5.
Plus, they already have a promising young core with Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle. They’ve proved they can win in the playoffs. What they haven't shown is that they can win a championship, which King James has done four times in his career.
But to make this blockbuster signing happen, San Antonio would probably have to fit the 41-year-old into a $15 million exception or pull off a complicated sign-and-trade. That is the exact same financial headache Golden State and Cleveland are dealing with.
Either way, the speculation is out there now, and nobody was even thinking about it a week ago.
