Dwight Howard has an intriguing idea for LeBron James' next ideal NBA franchise. Howard views the San Antonio Spurs as an ideal destination that could help James win multiple championships before he retires.
"I think he wins two more if he goes," Howard wrote on X, asking fans whether James should head to San Antonio.
Howard's post came after the news surfaced regarding James' plans to leave the Lakers, ending his eight-year tenure that began in 2018. Over 479 games, he averaged 25.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.9 assists, winning Finals MVP in 2020 and leading the franchise to its 17th title.
James, turning 42 in December, must decide which team he will join to play his 24th NBA season. Free agency started at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday, but he can't sign until July 6 per league rules. The Golden State Warriors are a strong possibility, especially after Draymond Green's $27.6 million deal opt-out for roster flexibility. However, the Cleveland Cavaliers are another team to keep an eye on, along with the Miami Heat.
After losing to the New York Knicks following their NBA Finals appearance, the Spurs, with a young core led by Wembanyama, could use a superstar wing like James to help close out games and shoulder the load throughout. Adding James to a team with guards like De'Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, and Stephon Castle could create a strong combo.

The Spurs would need to fit James into the $15 million mid-level exception or arrange a sign-and-trade, but that is a similar limitation other interested suitors with a real chance to contend for a championship will face.
The Ringer's Bill Simmons suggested a package with Keldon Johnson's expiring deal and Luke Kornet, calling San Antonio the most entertaining fit for James where he could win a title. He also believes the Spurs could have beaten the Knicks if James had been in the rotation.
As it stands, the Spurs have been linked to numerous veteran frontcourt players in the non-taxpayer mid-level exception range, including Rui Hachimura and Tobias Harris, among other potential targets. The other element of this was that San Antonio had the chance to pursue a trade for Kawhi Leonard but was not interested.

Howard won a championship in 2020 with the Lakers after being in a position to ring chase late in his career, so he understands these circumstances well.
