The New England Patriots would be better off with Kayshon Boutte on their roster for the 2026 season, but the dynamics at play might be far too complicated to appease dreamers of that scenario.
Unfortunately, the reality remains that the Patriots are crowded at the wide receiver position, and Boutte has been pushed further down the depth chart in the final year of his rookie contract. This will be an opportunity for him to ball out and maximize his value on the free agent market in 2027.
However, that might be easier said than done.
It will be hard to do that effectively when competing behind A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. The team also has DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III currently on their roster. It's a situation where the writing appears to already be on the wall for Boutte, and other teams have been calling to get a feel for things, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.
"The Patriots have received calls on Boutte and likely will continue to do so," Graziano wrote. "And as always, unless and until we see a contract extension, we're justified in wondering whether the player is in the team's long-term plans. The Raiders and Commanders stand out as two teams that could still use help at wide receiver."
Keep in mind, none of this completely rules out the possibility that Boutte could remain on the Patriots' roster for the 2026 season.
His presence would give the team arguably the deepest receiving room in the NFL. Coming off a Super Bowl berth, maybe the team views the situation as worth seeing through for the possibilities, more so than recouping a late-round draft pick in a hypothetical trade for the player.
Or, perhaps they are still waiting on the right offer to push an eventual deal through.
