Latest prediction offers extremely bleak outlook for New York Jets in 2026 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New York Jets had a brutal season in 2025. The team lost seven of its final eight games and ended with a 3-14 overall record.

Despite being so bad, the Jets still didn't earn the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. As a result, they weren't able to select a potential franchise passer, so the quarterback position is still a major question mark.

To patch that hole, the team brought back old friend Geno Smith. Smith had a horrendous 2025 season with the Las Vegas Raiders, but the hope seems to be that another change of scenery will help Smith get back to form.

However, it's not hard to imagine a scenario where things go terribly wrong for the team again in 2026. In fact, one analyst imagines the team being historically bad.

Analyst predicts Jets to be first-ever team to go 0-17

Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently came up with some bold predictions for the 2026 season. Unfortunately, fans of the Jets won't like the prediction for their team.

Davenport predicts the Jets to go 0-17, and become the first team in NFL history to do so. Regarding that prediction, Davenport offered the following:

An offense that finished last season 29th in both yards per game and points per game will be led in 2026 by journeyman Geno Smith, who struggled badly in Las Vegas. A defense that allowed more points than any team in the AFC also has significant questions at all three levels.

New York was the last team in the league to secure a win last year, losing seven straight before getting past the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 8. This year, the Jets won't only be the last team to win a game. They won't—becoming the NFL's first-ever 0-17 team in the process.

As Davenport mentioned, the Jets finished near the bottom of the league in pretty much every offensive category last season. Is it really likely that Smith at quarterback will be the change that fixes everything?

Sure, the Jets did draft wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. and tight end Kenyon Sadiq, but other than that, the offense is pretty much the same. Unless the two rookies are immediately stars, and Smith plays like he did three years ago, it's hard to imagine this offense being even decent.

Still, going winless in a 17-game season would be extremely hard to do. No NFL team has gone winless since the Cleveland Browns in 2017, back when teams still played 16-game schedules.
