Hope remains alive among the New York Jets faithful. After years of frustration and false starts, season-long and in-game, there is at least a sense that the organization is moving in a more stable direction.

General manager Darren Mougey has earned praise for several of his decisions, and there are pieces on the roster that could help form a sustainable foundation.

The Jets finally look serious about ending their cycle of dysfunction, but the challenge is that NFL rebuilds are often measured by one question: Do you have the quarterback?

That's where uncertainty begins to creep into conversations about New York's future. Even if veteran quarterback Geno Smith plays well, some remain skeptical about whether the Jets possess the type of roster capable of competing with the AFC's elite. Teams led by Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes continue to set the conference's standard, and climbing into that tier is easier said than done.

Within the AFC East alone, the path appears difficult. The Buffalo Bills are always a threat with Josh Allen under center. The New England Patriots were the conference's most recent representative in the Super Bowl. Recently, FOX Sports grouped every NFL team into tiers based on their outlook for the upcoming season, and he believes that the journey back to relevance is only beginning.

If the Jets' future isn't now, what comes next?

The Jets landed near the bottom of the league in FOX Sports' projection. They're placed in Tier 8 alongside teams viewed as potential contenders for the first overall selection in the next NFL Draft. That group also included the Las Vegas Raiders, the Miami Dolphins, the Cleveland Browns, and the Arizona Cardinals. The Bills and Patriots land in his 'title contenders' tier.

Vacchiano's assessment was particularly blunt. He suggested that several teams in the tier are still searching for a true franchise quarterback and noted that the race for the top pick could become one of the defining storylines of the season. He also argued that neither team possesses a realistic path to the playoffs and that reality could become apparent relatively early in the year.

Whether one agrees with that evaluation or not, it highlights a growing perception around the league. Whenever a team is projected near the bottom of the standings, attention naturally shifts toward the next quarterback class. That's especially true when questions remain about the long-term answer under center.

Names like Arch Manning, Dante Moore, and Julian Sayin are already generating discussion among draft observers, though there is still an entire college football season to be played before those conversations become more concrete. For now, they represent possibilities rather than plans.

Still, the larger question facing the Jets extends beyond any individual prospect. If this season proves to be another difficult chapter, how much patience will ownership show with Aaron Glenn and the current regime? Will the keys be given to Frank Reich? Rebuilds rarely unfold in a straight line, and New York's may require another offseason or two before its ultimate direction becomes clear.

For a fan base that has already waited so long, that's probably the hardest reality of all. The optimism is real, but so are the challenges. Whether the Jets can accelerate their timeline or must continue building toward a future yet to arrive may be the defining storyline of their season.
