Mar. 14—PRICEVILLE — When people think about Priceville girls basketball, it's always going to be hard not to think about Abby Langlois.
And that's saying something because in the history of the Priceville program, there are some talented players that have worn the black and gold. Langlois deserves her spot among them.
"She's the best. She's a superstar," Priceville head coach Shane Childress said. "I've coached a lot of great players over the years, a lot. Abby is at the top of my list."
Langlois certainly put up a superstar season this year, averaging a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds per game as well as having 71 steals and 62 blocks. Her strong senior campaign earned her The Decatur Daily's Class 5A-7A Player of the Year.
As important as Langlois has been for Priceville, Priceville has been equally important to her.
"Ever since I was little all I wanted to do was play for Priceville," Langlois said. "My sister played here, so I grew up going to the games and seeing the atmosphere. It made me so excited to get my turn.
"It's no secret that volleyball is my main sport, but the fans and my teammates genuinely made basketball so much fun."
Langlois wasted no time making an impact once she got on Priceville's varsity team, playing a key part in the Bulldogs' state finals team as a freshman in 2023 and earning The Daily's Player of the Year in 2024. However, an injury would sideline her for the entirety of her junior season, something that was hard for a player as competitive as Langlois.
"I hated it. Missing an entire season of playing with my sister (Josi Langlois) and my teammates hurt," Langlois said. "The worst part was missing the county tournament. That's my favorite time of the year and it was in our home gym so missing it really made me want to get back out there."
After missing her junior year, Langlois made the most of her final season as she was the key piece in a team that went 24-7, reached the Sweet 16 and upset the defending champion and No. 1 Scottsboro along the way. She also helped Priceville win its sixth Morgan County championship in a row, earning her second county MVP in the process.
Childress, who was in his second season with Priceville this year, wasn't here for Langlois' player of the year campaign in 2024 but he said he quickly learned why she earned it.
"Abby could control the game on both ends of the floor and I don't know that I've ever had a player quite like that," Childress said. "She had natural leadership skills and the level to which she communicated with her team was unreal."
Langlois' now joins four other Bulldogs — Kathleen Wheeler, Jenna Walker, Leslie Hames and Leah Childress — who have earned Decatur Daily Player of the Year honors. She joins Wheeler as the two players to earn the honor twice.
Despite all her achievements though, Langlois said she hopes Priceville fans remember her character over her accolades and said she wasn't ready to assert herself as the top player in Bulldogs' history.
"I'll maybe say I was top three behind Kathleen and Jenna. That's as far as I'll go" Langlois said.
