To quote The Simpsons season 11 premiere, which included a send-up of the classic Mr. Smith Goes to Washington scene, "that man sure knows how to filibuster."
In this case, we're referring to LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin, who had a 30-minute session upon the main podium at SEC Media Days on Thursday. Kiffin spent the first 16 minutes and 20 seconds of his session delivering his opening statement, and thus vastly reduced the opportunity to take questions.
His filibustering meant there was now a much lower probability that he'd face tough questions, so kudos to him on controlling his platform. Given what a lightning rod he often can be, it's understandable.
During his long-winded opening soliloquy Kiffin introduced the three players that he selected to attend SEC Media Days, including linebacker Whit Weeks. During the Weeks introduction, the Tigers coach discussed the defender's decision to skip the NFL Draft, and instead return for his senior year.
"..you have Whit that had a chance to go to the NFL Draft, and a lot of people would have in his situation with a coaching change and having played really well," Kiffin said.
"Whit decided to stay. He wanted to see LSU return to dominance, to return to the style of play that he grew up watching, which was the reason why he came here, and he wanted to come back to make sure he was part of that."
We'll see how
NFL Draft Buzz has Weeks ranked as the #19 linebacker, and 143rd overall prospect. That corresponds to about a fifth or sixth round projection. Meanwhile NFL Mock Draft Database gives Weeks a seventh round projection, ranking him the 228th best prospect on the big board.
Now these are not etched in stone by any means, but you kind of get the idea here. Weeks was smart to come back to school, and work on his game, and with that, maybe improve his draft stock for 2027.
Maybe he also wanted to see "LSU return to dominance" as well, but we're guessing that the primary reason was to better prepare for his own future.
Of course, when it comes to Whit Weeks and Lane Kiffin, the top trending topic is not his draft stock, and understandably so. Yes, the main storyline, getting all the pub this week, is the fact that Weeks is dating Landry Kiffin, Lane's daughter.
The novelty of a star player dating the coach's daughter makes for a compelling narrative no doubt, but we're not going to expound on that anymore.
